ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- A suicide car bomb targeting a security checkpoint in northwest Pakistan killed at least 25 people, including 10 police officers, and wounded 50 others, a Peshawar police spokesman said Saturday.
Most of the wounded are civilians, police said. Hospital officials reported many victims in critical condition.
The explosion happened at the Vanglee checkpoint on the outskirts of Peshawar, police said.
Peshawar is the capital of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province, near the country's border with Afghanistan, and is rife with Islamic extremists.
